Highlanders wore tartan for many centuries. In early times this was a versitile article that was used as a cloak or a sleeping bag. The material was rectangular in shape and measured about five metres.

The rectangular shape did not prove practicle for men on horse back so they wore tartan tights known as trews. Lowlanders did not wear tartan until an act was passed after a national protest.
